50 people involved – Accusations of witchcraft: women and family burned

In the northeast of India, residents of a village killed a woman and four members of her family. They were cast with gasoline because of alleged witchcraft and then burned. It is said that around 50 people have been involved in implementation.

The remains of the five killed people were thrown into a pool and later found by the authorities, the Omroep NDTV and other media reported, referring to the police.

Two of the 50 people involved have been arrested so far. NDTV spoke about a case of “medieval mischievos”. The 16-year-old son of the killed woman was able to flee for the crowd’s attacks. He filed a complaint with the police.

According to his statements, the attackers invaded his parents’ house at night, the residents of the house touched with bamboo sticks and dragged them outside, where they had set up the family. His mother would have described her as a “witch”.

Black magic
According to the media, police officers said that a villager had accused the woman, had practiced black magic and was responsible for the death of a son and the disease of another children. Other villagers were rushed to the woman.

According to reports from the magazine “Frontline”, Witch persecution in parts of India is still a widespread phenomenon. Between 2000 and the end of 2024, more than 2500 cases were registered with women reportedly being the victim of such a persecution. In various states there are laws against witch hunt.
