300 spikes under the care of Italians
When Massimo Vacchetta recorded a small, orphanage round twelve years ago, he had no idea that a life’s work would occur from that moment on. “Ninna” was only 25 grams of light, half dead – and became a first spark for a center that now costs more than 300 wounded or orphanage. Many of them would otherwise just have been dead, poisoned or burned.
What looks like a local welfare project for animals is actually an emergency call for the whole of Europe. 70 percent of the hedgehog population has already disappeared on the continent. And the causes are homemade: road traffic, pesticides, motor senses, concrete deserts instead of gardens. “Every life counts – even if it is spiky,” says the vet with a serious expression.
The animals come with open breaks, internal injuries, often too young to survive alone. In shoe boxes with bottles in hot water, drip bottles every hour, they are picked up. Some are littered with flyers, others were attacked by dogs or illuminated in leaf sticks.
Healthy animals are omitted in the neighborhood
Healthy animals are released in a protected forest nearby after completing care. However, some patients remain forever – with amputated limbs or neurological damage that makes a return to nature impossible. You get a permanent, protected place in the middle.
The clinic keeps donations. No public resources, no subsidies – although the hedgehog is considered a protected species. Instead, there is support from fans worldwide, including rock star Brian May (lead guitarist of the British rock band Queen), cartoon legend Bruno Bozzetto or Brigitte Bardot.
