For the World’s Day of the Snake, expert Helga Happ offers information about domestic biodiversity. Snake intersections were not only found in Styria, but also in Carinthia.
This year, researchers in Styria found a snake feeling: as reported, “because they are neither hornvipers nor a mixture of both species. This has been very rare and it has been discussed for decades whether a crossing has been possible at all,” says Snake expert Helga Happ of the Klagenfurttt.
The find is a real rarity. “But in Carinthia we documented such a case 20 years ago in Bad Eisenkappel. The snake looked like a black crucifixion, but had characteristics of a Hoornviper.”
It is still unclear whether the animal was a cross or a mutation. Everyone now hopes that the styric find will lead to new knowledge. “The pregnant woman in particular is interesting because we suspect that hybrids are sterile,” Happ said.
In any case, the snakes in Carinthia are doing well so far. Dice Dice and Horn Viper are still threatened with extinction. The snakes are especially useful when it comes to decimating mice or rats.
The new trend, no cheese vouchers, but to put wooden planks around houses, comes to snakes. “They crawl under it, are protected from above and can hunt comfortably and enjoy the warmth,” the expert said.
