On Thursday, a 69-year-old in the Bregenzerwald in Vorarlberg had to experience first-hand how dangerous hay work can be. The man fell from his hay loader to the ground, sustaining injuries to his cervical spine so badly that he had to be flown by emergency helicopter to the state hospital in Feldkirch.
The serious accident at work happened at 3:41 p.m. on Thursday when the 69-year-old man was working with acquaintances in the Bregenzerwald municipality of Schwarzenberg. As the helpers lifted the hay onto the loader, the 69-year-old trampled it onto the vehicle.
He stood on the hay loader at a height of about two and a half meters. The vehicle itself was not in operation and stood still on the sloping terrain. For reasons still unknown, the 69-year-old suddenly lost his balance and fell onto the pasture through no fault of his own.
Serious Cervical Spine Injuries
He sustained such severe injuries to his cervical spine that, after receiving first aid at the scene, he had to be flown in the Christophorus 8 emergency helicopter to the state hospital in Feldkirch.
