According to British intelligence experts, Russia has made false statements about its alleged successes in invading Ukraine. The scope and scale of Russia’s claims are still limited, the Defense Ministry said in London on Saturday. The statement made by the Russians a few days ago that they had invaded the city of Siwersk was not true. Meanwhile, Ukraine is making defensive gains.
“Russia has also made hasty and false claims about achievements before,” said intelligence information released by the British government. The reason for this is probably the desire to demonstrate the successes at home to the population and to boost the morale of their own troops.
By contrast, according to British experts, the Ukrainians have successfully repulsed Russian attacks since they withdrew from the city of Lysychansk. The defense line has since been shortened and strengthened, which proved essential to thwart the Russian offensive. Because London regularly publishes intelligence reports on the state of affairs since the start of the war, the Russian government accuses the British of a targeted disinformation campaign.
Russia escalates attacks
Meanwhile, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has ordered an escalation of attacks on Ukraine. Activities must be expanded in all directions of attack, his ministry said on Saturday. This should deprive the Kiev government of the opportunity “to continue carrying out massive artillery and missile strikes on infrastructure and civilians in the Donbass and other regions,” it said. The Ukrainian General Staff had previously announced that Russia had again intensified the attacks.
Shoigu gave the order during his second inspection of troops in Ukraine. The first took place at the end of June. This time, the Russian defense minister honored two high-ranking generals. One of them is the head of the army group “Center”, Colonel General Alexander Lapin, who is considered responsible for the capture of the Sievjerodonetsk – Lyssychansk agglomeration in the Donbass by troops loyal to Moscow.
70-year-old woman killed in airstrike
Targets fired on by Russian troops on Saturday included Chuhuiv in the northeast and Nikopol in the southeast of the country. Three people were killed in the airstrike on Chuhuiv in the Kharkov region, the region’s governor Oleh Synyehubov said on Telegram. Among them is a 70-year-old woman. In addition, three people were injured. A residential building, a school and a shop were damaged. Rescuers searched the rubble for other possible victims, Synyehubov wrote.
Two people have been killed in Nikopol, according to local emergency services and the regional governor. The dead were found under the rubble of stricken buildings. The governor of the Dnepropetrovsk region, Valentyn Resnichenko, said Russian forces fired 53 Grad missiles at Nikopol.
