Many homeowners in southern Burgenland nearly burned their fingers. They were fooled by online scammers. The alleged dealers pretended to sell cheap firewood for the winter. In most cases, the coup was discovered in time.
The gas and wood crisis is causing a bizarre, sometimes criminal boom. Worried about a harsh winter that will freeze house and apartment owners, the big tremors started long ago in the middle of summer at 30 degrees Celsius and more. Fraudsters try to take advantage of this tense situation.
money is gone
As reported, a northern Burgenlander had already paid 2,750 euros to unknown perpetrators for the alleged delivery. Only when the “timber traders” – allegedly from Vorarlberg – had demanded another 850 euros, did the victim become suspicious. Experts from the Chamber of Labor stopped the coup.
prices rise
The fact is that the demand for heating materials such as wood and pellets is exploding. Consumer uncertainty drives prices up. Consumer protection portals now warn of dubious firewood shops on the internet. As in many other cases, a homeowner from the Güssing district almost fell into the trap of the scammers.
coup failed
“The offer was tempting. When I asked in writing, the details followed. I was asked to make a down payment,” says the person concerned. In the end, he left the company alone.
“If the goods are touted as particularly cheap, doubts should already arise,” say researchers. The alarm bells should start ringing at the latest when a store prescribes an advance. “That’s actually not common in online retail,” they say.
