The command for the more than 170 Austrian soldiers in Bosnia-Herzegovina was transferred: the Styrian Hannes Krainz took over responsibility, and that in a politically tense time.
The Austrian soldiers in Bosnia and Herzegovina are under new command – but Styria is still spoken: Colonel Christian Tesar is succeeded by Colonel Hannes Krainz. The former Dragon pilot Tesar (57) was born in Upper Austria, but has lived in Pirka near Graz for years. Krainz (52) went to school in Kapfenberg and now lives in Vienna.
There are currently 172 Austrians, including six women, on foreign assignments in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In September, another company of Jäger Battalion 18 from St. Michael in Upper Styria is sent there. The company includes more than 100 additional soldiers.
Parliamentary elections are coming
In total, the EU mission Eufor consists of about 1,100 soldiers from 19 countries – from Albania to France and Italy to Switzerland and Turkey. In his farewell address, Tesar stressed its importance even more than 25 years after the end of the Yugoslav war: “The situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina still requires a military presence. Eufor is making an important contribution to keeping the security situation in this country stable.” Parliamentary elections will be held in early October, which could further fuel political tensions in the country with its fragile state structure.
