In the midst of a political crisis in his country, Rome’s head of government travels to the North African nation to ensure supplies and overcome Russian dependence

Although his government is in the midst of a political crisis and may be in its final days in power, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi traveled to Algeria on Monday to strengthen ties with the North African country and ensure the supply of hydrocarbons to allow Italy to free itself from Russian dependence. The goal will begin to be met when less than five months have passed since the Moscow-ordered invasion of Ukraine, which led to the adoption of severe European sanctions against Russia and could lead to the end of Russian gas exports to Russia in the coming months. the Old continent.

«In these months, Algeria has become our country’s main gas supplier. A few days ago, the Algerian company Sonatrach announced the next shipment of 4,000 million cubic meters of gas to Italy under the agreement signed with Eni in April,” said Draghi in Algiers, where he met the president of the North African country, Abdelmadjid Tebboune.Accompanied by several ministers and representatives of companies, the Italian head of government took advantage of his stay to sign several institutional and economic cooperation agreements, in areas such as renewable energy, the pharmaceutical industry and infrastructure, in addition to the struggle against corruption.

With this journey, which has continued despite the severity of the political crisis his country is experiencing, Draghi returns to Rome at the end of May to consolidate the relationship between Algeria and Italy. its gas needs without having to resort to Moscow. The authorities of Algiers are also very interested in an excellent harmony with that of Rome, especially at the current moment of crisis in relations between Spain and the North African country following the overthrow of the Pedro Sánchez government in Western Sahara.

The successes of the visit to Algeria contrast with the gloomy atmosphere Draghi found on his return to Rome, in whose parliament he will appear this Wednesday to account for the political crisis and submit to a vote of confidence. This is what the president of the republic, Sergio Mattarella, asked of him after the chief executive tendered his resignation last Thursday after losing support from one of the ruling coalition parties, the Five Star Movement. The continuity of the government would be due to the departure of that political power from the cabinet, although there are also many possibilities that the current crisis will lead to the calling of early elections.
