What are we up against? – Up to 38 degrees: High “Jürgen” heats up well

Date:

Temperatures of more than 40 degrees are currently causing almost unbearable heat in Western Europe. The reason for this is the heat high “Jürgen”. According to the experts at the Austrian Severe Weather Center (UWZ), “Jürgen” will also warm up our place this week. On Wednesday temperatures of up to 37 degrees are expected, in some places even 38 degrees are possible – this means that the risk of forest fires increases, but also risks to our health. More than 1,000 heat deaths have already been recorded in countries such as Spain and Portugal.

As early as Monday, the core of the high slowly shifted from the British Isles to Central Europe, causing temperatures to rise in our country as well. This has already brought us to 33 degrees in parts of Tyrol and Vorarlberg, Tuesday it should be 36 degrees.

heat and thunder
In the middle of the week “Jürgen” reaches the east of the country with a lot of sun, where 35 degrees and locally even up to 38 degrees can be expected. In the west, on the other hand, strong thunderstorms are expected from Vorarlberg to Salzburg during the day. There will also be thunderstorms in the north at night.

While Thursday will bring temporary cloud cover and strong thunderstorms throughout the day in the southern mountains and the southeast, the next high is already noticeable in the west: temperatures drop slightly, but still climb to 34 degrees. On Friday it will be very warm throughout Austria, the sun is shining everywhere. Saturday is also expected to be very warm with maximums around 37 degrees in the east.

Risk of forest fires will increase
July has been far too dry so far, especially in East Tyrol and Carinthia, but also from Vorarlberg to the Hausruckviertel and in the eastern lowlands, with in some cases less than half the usual amount of precipitation. Thanks to the wet June, the situation is not yet dramatic, but the risk of wildfires will increase in the coming days, says Mortimer Müller of the Institute for Silviculture at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences.

The greatest fire hazard can be expected in the lowlands of eastern Austria. However, because there are few forest areas, there is a high risk of wildfires. “The eastern edge of the Alps in Lower Austria, with its populations of black pine, is currently at the highest risk from forest fires,” the BOKU expert told APA. Lake Neusiedler See reached its lowest water level on Monday since the measurements began in 1965.

Heat is a challenge for the body
But the risk of forest fires is not only increasing rapidly due to the enormous heat across the country. Sweaty temperatures can also have devastating effects on your health. The heart and circulatory system are put under pressure, which can lead to dizziness, nausea and heat stroke. The Ministry of Health warns for special caution: this is for questions Talk on the phone on the number 050 555 555 available around the clock. In acute cases, the health hotline advises 1450, call the ambulance in an emergency.

Older people, infants, small children, chronically ill patients, pregnant women or people who have to work outside the home are especially at risk at temperatures above 30 degrees. The range of health effects of heat is therefore wide, ranging from dizziness to death. In 2018, for example, 766 people died in Austria with a maximum of more than 100 summer days with a minimum of 25 degrees, AGES reported.

As a result of the devastating drought and numerous forest fires, 659 heat deaths have already been registered in Portugal. Hundreds of people have also died in Spain.
