Huge waves have flooded homes, businesses and coastal roads in parts of Hawaii. An estimated 7,60-foot wave was observed off the island of Oahu, the U.S. Pacific Archipelago Environmental Agency said Monday (local time). Videos show high waves lapping over two-story houses – even a wedding almost completely fell into the water.
In Kailua-Kona on the main island of Hawaii, the violent surf turned a young couple’s wedding party upside down: the waves washed away the festively set tables in the garden, sending the guests to flight. But the party went on as usual, the food and the wedding cake were fortunately spared.
According to the environmental agency, the south coast of the tropical paradise had not seen such high waves in 25 years. Emergency services were called to hundreds of surgeries over the weekend, it said. Meteorologists attributed the dangerous surf to remnants of a storm in the Pacific Ocean. Rising sea levels as a result of climate change also play a role.
