Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin has arrived in Iran’s capital Tehran for a summit with his Iranian and Turkish colleagues. Images from state television showed the Russian president at the Mehrabad airport in the capital on Tuesday.
Turkish head of state Recep Tayyip Erdogan had previously held talks with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and supreme religious leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The summit of the three heads of state is slated to discuss the situation in civil war-torn Syria.
Negotiating the future of Syria
The three states have negotiated the future of Syria in the past. Russia and Iran support the Syrian government, while Turkey is an ally of the opposition.
Observers expect that the Russian war in Ukraine will also be discussed. It is Putin’s second officially known foreign trip since Russia invaded Ukraine in late February.
