The Zicksee in St. Andrä (Burgenland) has almost dried up due to the ongoing heat wave. Last but not least, this leads to the fish in it dying. To save the animals, St. Andrä Mayor Andreas Sattler (ÖVP) asked anglers to help move the fish. About 30 tons were fished out of the water, which was only about 20 centimeters deep.
Until recently, water was still pumped into the Zicksee, but permission for this was withdrawn at the beginning of June: “The community is allowed to donate a certain amount. When a certain groundwater level is reached, we have to switch off,” Sattler explained in an interview with APA on Tuesday. Only about half of the approximately 120 hectares is currently available.
By Monday afternoon, three tons of fish had already been fished from the lake. In total it should now be between 20 and 30 tons, confirms Christoph Pölzer, fisheries control body for the Zicksee.
The resettled fish are mainly carp. The zander and pike found in the lake are more sensitive and therefore most of them have already died.
The rescued animals were moved to the surrounding artificial dredging ponds. Anglers from the area used nets and landing nets to retrieve the animals from the dried up lake. The water in the Zicksee is very murky. You now have to keep a close eye on it in order to discover and save the fish that are still in it in time.
