Strong winds fanned a small fire in northeast Athens into a major conflagration on Tuesday evening. Thick, brownish plumes of smoke could be seen from almost every region of Athens. The situation is “serious,” regional governor Giorgos Patoulis said on state radio.

Residents of the affected regions were texted to be ready to leave their homes if the fire service ordered. A village had already been evacuated as flames loomed, Greek state television reported.
In the summer of 2021, massive fires broke out in the region below Mount Penteli, some 25 kilometers northeast of Athens, destroying large swaths of forest and bushland. “Eleven fire-fighting planes and six helicopters” are in use, a spokesman for the fire service said on state radio. In addition to the Greek emergency services, firefighters from Romania are also present.
