Fires Spread – ‘Beach Fogged’: Adriatic Fires Spread

Date:

After the forest fire in the popular holiday resort of Bibione in the Veneto region, new fires broke out in Italy on Tuesday. In the karst area in the Friuli region, part of the highway and a railway had to be closed. The fire was still clearly visible in the seaside town of Grado, reports a “Krone” editor.

“The fire was clearly visible in Grado in the afternoon, but over time the beach became quite foggy. We could also observe fire-fighting planes in action,” reports Krone editor Gerot Schwaiger, who is currently in Grado.

Staff evacuated to toll booth on highway
Fire units from Udine, Trieste and Gorizia (Gorizia) are currently involved in the major fire in the karst area. The flames have already spread to the area next to the toll booth of the Lisert highway, which had to be evacuated. The personnel were evacuated by the fire brigade because the flames had come very close to the toll station.

Several trains should be cancelled
The motorway manager Autovie Venete ordered the closure of the section of the A4 motorway between Redipuglia and Lisert in the direction of Trieste. A section of 30 kilometers between Sistiana and Redipuglia in the direction of Venice was also closed.

The rail connection between Monfalcone and Bivio d’Aurisina was also suspended. Trieste train station was not accessible. Several trains had to be canceled and replaced by buses, the Trenitalia railway company said.

350 hectares of forest destroyed: “worrying situation”
A Canadair aircraft was used to fight the fire. The authorities spoke of a worrying situation. The cause of the heavy fires that raged in the karst area on Monday is still unknown, and an investigation is underway. 350 hectares of forest were destroyed between Italy and Slovenia. A large fire broke out on Friday in a wooded suburb in the seaside resort of Bibione near Venice, which has since been extinguished.

Fire also broke out in Rome in the southern EUR district on Tuesday. This led to major traffic problems. Rome has been ravaged by fierce fires for weeks. An arsonist was flagrantly arrested in the Italian capital on Monday.

Numerous forest fires also kept the fire brigades of the provincial capital South Tyrol busy in and around Bolzano. According to the news portal Stol.it, emergency services again had to divert to a forest fire near Bozner’s Guntschna promenade on Tuesday, after already fighting several fires in the region on Monday.

Arson in South Tyrol?
Due to the frequent outbreaks, the emergency services assumed targeted arson. “Four fires within a few days, always in the same area, and the absence of natural factors, such as lightning, leaves little room for many other hypotheses,” says Florian Blaas of Staatsbosbeheer. A fire station was set up.
