Small beneficial insects – bats in Carinthia: the hunters of the night

Date:

These mild evenings at the end of July invite you to sit outside. Since then…. Did you notice? That shadow that silently passed over you; fast, skillful, purposeful… It was most likely a bat on its way to nighttime forays. The “Krone” was in action for the small beneficial insects, which unfortunately are often threatened with extinction.

Bats are a good indicator of good environmental conditions. So be happy if you see bats. The world is still okay with you. We at the “Krone” helped to prepare a future for these animals as part of the “Show Responsibility!” engagement days.

Together with Klaus Krainer, the founder of the ARGE NATURSCHUTZ, we have made it our mission to do something good for the native bats, which play an important role in various ecosystems and also help to reduce pests in agriculture and forestry. .

Old bunker as winter residence
Equipped with a ladder, tape measure, various tools and ten special boxes for birds and bats, we took a sweaty walk to an old military bunker. Hidden among the lush greenery of nature, the entrance to the abandoned fortifications suddenly appeared, which now serve as a winter home for the lesser horseshoe bats. Between cave spiders and horrors, the old walls were measured and checked for winter suitability.

Search accommodation from mid-October
“Native bats hibernate in frost-free, high-humidity shelters, such as caves, tunnels, or under boulders,” Krainer says. From mid-October, the small animals start looking for shelter. Until then, eat as long as you can. They will be active again from March at the earliest,” explains the biologist.

And during this time the focus is of course on the youngsters. The ten boxes were therefore labeled, accurately documented and attached to different trees.

“Bats are viviparous and normally only have one young. The gestation period is on average six weeks,” Krainer adds, who is already hoping for colonization of the small beneficial insects during his next round of inspections.

“Even if someone discovers bats in their home, please let us know. We are grateful for any report and documentation.”
