Bizkaia approves cannon charging for trucks driving on the road

Date:

The fee is applied to trucks weighing more than 3.5 tons passing through the A-8 from Basurto to El Haya, the N-240 through Barazar, the N-636 from Durango to Gipuzkoa via Kanpazar, the Txorierri corridor and the BI-625, from Laudio to Basauri.

The General Assemblies of Biscay have approved, with the votes of PNV and PSE —government partners in the Biscay Provincial Council—, collecting a cannon to trucks on the way through five stretches of highways in the area. EH Bildu and Elkarrekin Bizkaia abstained and the PP voted against. The measure will come into effect at the end of 2022.

According to the approved foral standard, the fee will be applied to heavy trucks over 3.5 tons on the way through the A-8 from Basurto to El Haya, de N-240 by Barazar, the N-636 from Durango to Gipuzkoa via Kanpazar, the Txorierri corridor and the BI-625from Laudio to Basauri.

Regional Infrastructure Commissioner Imanol Pradales, as well as groups supporting the regional government team, have emphasized that this draft standard meets the requirement of a European Sustainability Directive, which requires highway capacity to be largely maintained by those who use it.

The PNV group in the General Assemblies of Bizkaia has assured that the institution is “in permanent contact with the sector”, “is aware of its situation” and will continue to talk to carriers. Similarly, the socialist group has stated that “to say the roads are free or with tolls is a misconception, because maintenance must be done and paid for for or among those who use them the most or of all.”

Elkarrekin Bizkaia and EH Bildu, for their part, warned of the risk to the road transport sector, asking for support measures for these professionals, as well as formulas to be negotiated with them “to mitigate the effect of the canon “in their company .

Meanwhile, the PP spokesperson Eduardo Andrade has deemed the canon “unjustified” that will represent an “exorbitant price for professionals who already have exorbitant fuel prices”, for which he has reiterated his proposals in favor of exemptions for the self-employed and SMEs , subscribed by groups of carriers that today in Gernika demonstrated against this compensation.
