The Syrian foreign minister said he was satisfied with the results of the summit in Tehran. “We welcome the efforts of Syria’s friends in Iran who have sought a balanced statement emphasizing Syria’s independence and sovereignty,” Foreign Minister Faisal al-Mikdad said in Tehran on Wednesday, in the presence of his Iranian counterpart Hussein Amirabdollahian.
After a tripartite summit in Tehran on Tuesday, Russia, Turkey and Iran agreed in a final statement to protect Syria’s territorial integrity and fight terrorism. A diplomatic solution to the conflict in the country of the civil war is being sought. On Wednesday, both foreign ministers again called on Turkey not to invade northern Syria.
Turkey warned of military action
In the past, the three states had already negotiated the future of Syria in the Astana format. Russia and Iran support the Syrian government, while Turkey is an ally of the opposition. Ankara has been announcing a new offensive in northern Syria for weeks and has occupied areas in the north as a result of previous military interventions. Russia and Iran recently warned Turkey against military action.
