Two 15-meter-high ash trees fell on the Rodl in Gramastetten and hit a mother (44) during a swim. Experts are now checking the trees in the area. The investigation into the devastating storm in Linz is still ongoing; The girl (9) who was hit by parts of a gingko is still in intensive care.
The other swimmers were just able to reach safety in time, but a 44-year-old mother from Altenberg was, as reported, caught by two falling 15-meter-high ash trees on the Rodl in Gramastetten on Sunday. She had to go to the hospital as an outpatient. Her daughter (7) remained unharmed.
Two trees are being cut down
The accident happened on the private property of a forest owner. Nevertheless, mayor Andreas Fazeni (ÖVP) is now investigating together with an expert “whether additional trees pose a danger” – the public toboggan pool is right next door. “We have decided that two trees will be cut down for safety reasons. If it is five or six, we will wait until winter,” the mayor said afterwards.
A possible cause could be a fungal infection, which is difficult to recognize from the outside on ash trees. The investigation into the real cause of the accident is still ongoing.
Girl still in intensive care
A tree expert is also working in Linz. He should clarify whether the gingko tree, which fell during the storm of July 6 during the knight’s festival, was sufficiently cared for. The seriously injured girl (9) is still in the pediatric intensive care unit two weeks later.
Owners must check trees
For solitary trees, such as the gingko in Linz, stricter care duties generally apply than for forest stands such as those in Gramastetten. According to the Chamber of Agriculture, owners must check the tree approximately once a year, depending on the condition and location of the tree, and more often in dangerous places such as next to playgrounds.
