Political crisis in Italy – Draghi now wants to remain prime minister

Date:

Mario Draghi is poised to stay on as Italy’s prime minister after his failed resignation bid. In a speech to the Senate on Wednesday, the non-partisan economist called on ruling parties, recently at odds, to unite behind him and the government. The 74-year-old awaits a confidence vote on Wednesday, the result of which is expected in the evening.

In his speech, Draghi stressed the need to reform the coalition that his government has supported so far. “Are the parties ready to restart the government pact? That’s the answer you have to give to all Italians,” Draghi said.

“We need to restore trust”
Draghi explained the goals achieved so far by his government, which has been in office since February 2021 and was created to take the country out of the corona pandemic and economic crisis. “I have never been so proud to be Italian,” said the prime minister. “The only way – if we still want to stick together – is to rebuild this confidence pact between the political forces of the government majority, with courage and credibility,” demanded Draghi, who campaigned for parliamentarians’ confidence in the Senate. .

The prime minister stressed the mobilization of mayors, citizens and economic experts to keep the government in office. “This mobilization is unprecedented,” he said. Italy is strong when it is closed. He described the earlier cohesion of the multi-party coalition that supported him as a ‘miracle’ of which he was proud. Draghi said the conditions for preserving the previous coalition are in place if the parties show unity.

cohesion to falter
In recent weeks, however, cohesion in the coalition has faltered, the prime minister noted. The decision by the left-wing populist Five Star Movement last week not to participate in a confidence vote marked the end of the pact that had previously held the coalition together. He then tendered his resignation, but head of state Sergio Mattarella turned it down and sent him to parliament to justify himself there.

Draghi’s speech is followed by a general debate lasting several hours. The expected confidence vote will then take place. The results are expected on Wednesday evening. If Draghi wins the confidence vote in the Senate, he must also seek confidence in the larger Chamber of Deputies. The meeting there is scheduled for Thursday.
