The number portability of the so-called “blessed” mobile phones is causing a stir in Israel.
In the eyes of Haredi Jews, digital communication is even a threat to their cultural walls. Originally, the rabbis banned the internet altogether. It is considered trefes – meaning impure – and is therefore not allowed. But the online world proved useful, and in advanced Israel, many government services are digital-only. So rabbis allowed computers and the internet anyway. Of course with limitations.
Area code 05331 is considered “pure”
A kosher – a pure – variant was considered for the use of mobile phones. Numbers with the area code 05331 are considered “blessed”. The devices have no cameras, porn sites are blocked and only other kosher numbers can be called. It has been criticized because government social services and institutions to contact in cases of sexual and domestic violence have also been blocked.
Minister of Communications Joas Hendel adopted new rules in April that allow unrestricted forwarding of kosher phone numbers to providers. The rabbis in particular are afraid of losing their controlling power. They determine which apps and programs can be used by believers on their mobile phones.
