Updated list – Kremlin: 5 more EU countries “unfriendly states”

Date:

The list of “unfriendly states” is getting longer: now the Kremlin has added Greece, Denmark, Slovakia, Slovenia and Croatia. Slovenia and Croatia are no longer allowed to hire embassy personnel in Russia. There is a good chance that other countries will be added to the list in the near future.

The list includes foreign states that the Russian government says are “taking unfriendly measures against Russian diplomatic and consular missions abroad”. On April 23, Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a regulation on measures against designated countries. This reflects the number of people that the mentioned countries and their diplomatic missions in Russia can hire.

Greece now has a limit of 34 people, Denmark 20, Slovakia 16, while Slovenia and Croatia can no longer employ people at all for their diplomatic missions or consular institutions. In May 2021, Russia imposed such restrictions on the United States and the Czech Republic.

In April, citing Article 11 of the Vienna Convention, Slovenia announced that the Russian embassy in Ljubljana would be reduced to the size of the Slovenian embassy in Moscow from 41 to eight employees.

Croatia also expelled a total of 24 employees of the Russian embassy in Zagreb in April, including 18 diplomats. Austria wants to keep communication channels with Russia open.
