Three people have been shot dead at a campground in the US state of Iowa. Police discovered a total of four bodies early Friday morning (local time), including that of the alleged gunman. He is said to have taken his own life.
This was announced by the state security service. First, police officers discovered three bodies in a nature reserve near the town of Maquoketa. A short time later, they also found the body of the suspected gunman west of the park. Emergency services had previously searched the area for his mobile home. The 23-year-old likely took his own life, it says.
No more danger to the public
The background of the fact is still unclear. There was no longer any danger to the public, the campsite was temporarily evacuated.
The United States has repeatedly struggled with gun violence. Nearly 20,000 people were shot and killed nationwide in 2020, according to the CDC. That’s more than 50 deaths a day. In early July, a 21-year-old man opened fire at an Independence Day parade in Highland Park, Illinois. Seven people were killed and many others were injured. Firearms are often readily available in the United States.
