Storm in the Stubai Valley – things discovered by the missing pastor on the banks of the creek

Date:

There is still no trace of the pastor missing since the heavy storms of Friday evening in the Tyrolean Stubai Valley. Few of his objects were found on the banks of the Ruetz, the 60-year-old’s wrecked car was fished out of the stream by emergency services. As has now become known, the floods have also taken a car in Mieders in addition to a couple in Fulpmes.

A Bible, business cards and documents – these personal belongings of the pastor were discovered on Saturday by water rescue services on the banks of the Ruetz. His car was also pulled from the flowing water of the creek – shredded into several pieces and barely recognizable as a car. There is no trace of the 60-year-old driver. On Saturday afternoon, the emergency services had to temporarily stop the search – the situation was too dangerous. You can’t move on until the water has calmed down.

Driver saved himself at the last minute
Masses of rubble seized a car in Mieders on Friday evening as well. The occupant was lucky: he was able to save himself in time by jumping out of the vehicle, which was dragged along by the Mühltalbach and washed into the Ruetz. “Part of the wreckage of the completely destroyed pickup is still sticking out of the water in the ‘Kirchbrücke’ area,” the police said on Saturday evening.

A car was also hit by a debris flow in Fulpmes. The two occupants were buried up to their upper arms and had to be rescued by the fire service.

The clean-up work after the storm continues. According to Mayor Andreas Gleirscher, the Oberbergtal in Neustift was “murdered like never before”. Streets were torn away, here alone the damage is likely to amount to many hundreds of thousands of euros. Several alpine meadows have been cut off from the outside world and had to be supplied with emergency units and drinking water from the air.

About 120 guests became trapped in the Franz-Senn hut after mudslides. About half of that was recovered by police helicopters, the rest would be flown out on Sunday.

Power cuts, floods, destroyed bridge
A total of 20 houses – including five hotels – in several neighborhoods were flooded and there were also power outages. In Fulpmes, a bridge over the Margaretenbach was completely destroyed and another damaged. Numerous rescue organizations were involved in large-scale operations. “Despite the unfavorable and dangerous conditions,” no emergency services were injured, police said.
