Age of men affects birth rate

Date:

Contrary to popular belief, the age of the males plays a greater role in conception. That’s according to a recent study from Great Britain.

For decades, women felt responsible when artificial insemination went wrong. British researchers now offer help to women who want to have children. A study of 19,000 cycles of in vitro fertilization has shown that the influence of father’s age on the live birth rate plays a greater role than previously thought.

The age of the male partner in women under 35 or over 40 had little influence on birth chances. However, for women aged 35-40, there was a “significant drop” in live births when the father was 40 and older.

When expectant mothers are under 35, the body is able to repair the common DNA damage that occurs in the sperm of older men, explains gynecologist Geeta Nargund.

“The research shows that fertility is also a men’s problem,” said study researcher Kate Brian. The results challenge the widely held assumption that maternal age should always play the most important role. The study aims to improve fertility education and communication for couples trying to conceive.
