In the fight against energy waste, the French government is planning stricter rules for the retail sector. Energy Transition Minister Agnès Pannier-Runacher said on Sunday that she would issue two ordinances in the coming days. Therefore, nighttime neon signs should be banned and air-conditioned stores should keep their doors closed.
If the doors are open, there will be “20 percent more consumption in air-conditioned stores, and that is absurd,” the minister told radio station RMC. The doors must now remain closed under threat of fines.
Pannier-Runacher also wants to ban neon signs in all French cities from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. Exceptions should apply to airports and train stations.
Up to 750 euros fine for open doors
Some cities in France, which like other countries in Europe have recently been hit by a heat wave, have already passed municipal ordinances requiring shops to close when the air conditioning is on. The cabinet now wants to introduce a national scheme that provides for fines of up to 750 euros. However, an information campaign is planned first.
