Six people have been shot dead outside a rehab facility in San Pedro Tlaquepaque, western Mexico. Five of the victims – four men and a woman – were found dead at the scene with various gunshot wounds. Another man died shortly afterwards.
The background of the crime on Sunday evening (local time) remained unclear, the public prosecutor of the state of Jalisco announced.
Fatal assaults in informal rehab facilities are common – authorities say they are often used to settle accounts related to drug trafficking. About two years ago, 27 people were shot dead in a massacre at one such facility in the city of Irapuato.
Since the Mexican state began militarily waging the so-called drug war in 2006, the spiral of violence has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives. The murder rate per capita in the North American country was about 100 times higher than in Germany last year.
