A beekeeper as “unwilling detonator”: On Monday at 3:52 pm, the police were ordered to go to Neumarkt im Mühlkreis in Upper Austria due to a dike fire. When they arrived, a wooden cabin in a wooded area was completely on fire. The fire had already spread to an adjacent wooden hut and the forest (about 80 square meters in total).
The initial investigation revealed that the hobby beekeeper and owner of the property, a 73-year-old from the Freistadt district, was melting beeswax in his cabin. To do this, he placed the solid wax in a stainless steel bucket on a larger gas stove, which he placed on a wooden table. The melting process usually takes an hour to 1.5 hours, so the man left the hut and continued to monitor the progress of the melting process.
Erase attempt failed
When the interior of the cabin was already completely ablaze, he made an emergency call to the fire brigade and tried to contain the fire with two hand extinguishers, but this was unsuccessful. A total of seven fire brigades quickly brought the fire under control and put out the fire at 5 p.m. Further investigations will follow.
