Austria’s population is currently growing solely through immigration. Since 2015, the proportion of the population with a migration background has increased from 21.4 percent to 25.4 percent. The largest group are people from Germany, followed by Romanian and Serbian nationals.
Statistics Austria reported this on Monday. At the beginning of 2022, approximately 2.24 million people with a migrant background lived in the country. The largest group are Germans (218,000 people, as of April 1, 2022), followed by people from Romania (140,454), Serbia (121,643) and Turkey (117,944). In fifth place are people from Bosnia and Herzegovina, followed by Croats and people from Hungary. Syrian and Polish nationals follow at some distance.
More Ukrainians in Austria
The number of Ukrainians has increased significantly this year. While about 13,000 people were still living there at the beginning of the year, there were already almost 53,000 people from Ukraine at the beginning of April. In contrast, about 34,000 people came from Russia at the beginning of the year.
According to Statistics Austria, the number of inhabitants without immigration would fall back to the level of the 1950s in the long term. The more often Austrian-born people and immigrants have direct contact, the more often they would report positively about cohabitation, Austria Statistics Director General Tobias Thomas said in a broadcast. He refers to a current survey, according to which 46 percent indicate that they live well together with daily contact. Among those who have little or no contact, that is only 29 percent of those surveyed.
