“Borders crossed” – Confidential counselor Orban resigns after scandalous speech

Date:

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban sparked outrage abroad with his outrageous speech to supporters in the Romanian seaside resort of Baile Tusnad (Tusnadfürdö). In addition to known attacks on the EU and its sanctions policy against Russia, he also made racist remarks – krone.at reported. This means that the right-wing conservative government leader has probably gone too far even for his party friends. A close Fidesz confidant resigned on Tuesday.

The Hungarian Prime Minister’s representative for social contacts, Zsuzsa Hegedüs, compared Orban to Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels. This was reported by the online portal telex.hu. In her letter to Orban, she expressed her regret that she had to end the relationship because of such an embarrassing statement. The speech in Tusnadfürdö would probably have made the “hardened racists” happy. Until now, she would have always supported Orban. But the racist statements he made, ‘which even Goebbels would have liked’, went beyond the limits of acceptance, Hegedüs justified her dismissal.

Hegedüs mainly referred to this passage from the speech: “We are willing to associate with each other, but we do not want to become multiracial.” The 59-year-old politician was referring to the immigration of people from African, Arab and Asian countries. A disturbing gas joke also caused a lot of inconvenience. “For example, there is the latest proposal from the European Commission, which states that everyone should be obliged to reduce their gas consumption by 15 percent. I don’t see how that should be enforced, although there is German know-how for it, I think from the past,” he said, in an obvious allusion to the gas chambers of the Nazi regime.

Visit to Vienna under an unlucky star
Against this background, Orban’s visit to Vienna with Chancellor Karl Nehammer becomes particularly explosive. The International Auschwitz Committee said it was “alarmed and shocked”. Commission vice-chairman Christoph Heubner also has expectations of the red-white-red government leader in this regard. Nehammer should tell Orban “how his racist forays into Europe’s past and future are assessed within the European Union”.

Nehammer has not yet commented on the cause. Announcing the visit on Thursday, the chancellor emphasized alignment with Orban in the fight against illegal migration and described Hungary as an “important neighbor and partner”.
