Situation remains critical – flooding: the Danube breaks a limit of 9 meters in Passau

Date:

The flood situation remains critical in parts of Bavaria, and water levels are also rising in Austria. A disaster had been declared in the Bavarian district of Rosenheim and evacuations took place in some places.

After more heavy rain overnight, rainfall is expected to decrease on Tuesday, the German Weather Service (DWD) said. In Regensburg, about 200 people had to leave their homes late in the evening. The affected street is located in the city center, directly on the Danube.

The subsoil there was very softened due to the high groundwater level and there was a risk that the flood defenses would fail and the road would be flooded.

In eastern Austria, the country was hit by heavy rain, even at night. There were flooded cellars and streets, and underpasses had to be drained.

Citizens must stay at home
On Monday evening, the Bavarian district of Rosenheim called on citizens to stay at home. “There is an acute danger to life and limb,” the authority said in a statement. The situation eased somewhat on Tuesday evening. Schools and kindergartens in the affected communities must remain closed on Tuesday. Face-to-face teaching at numerous schools in seven Bavarian districts will be canceled on Tuesday due to the flooding situation.

The Danube breaks the nine-metre barrier
In Passau, the water level on the Danube exceeded the limit of nine meters on Tuesday night. At 3am, the Flood Intelligence Service (HND) reported a water level of 9.27 meters – predicting the peak for Tuesday afternoon at 9.50 metres.

The situation remains critical in many parts of the country:

Passau’s old town was largely closed to car traffic on Monday. From a water level of 8.50 meters – which was measured on Monday afternoon – the built-up areas are more flooded. High water levels were also observed in Austria. In Linz, the Danube could reach a height of 6.5 meters during Tuesday, which is one meter above the warning limit.

The peaks were expected during the night or Tuesday at several measuring points along the Danube, including Regensburg, Straubing and Deggendorf. The flood waters receded, especially on the southern tributaries of the Danube.

Four people died
In Baden-Württemberg, the weather situation is slowly improving and the consequences of the devastating flood are becoming increasingly visible. Thousands of helpers are still in action. Four fatalities have been recovered in southern Germany so far.

Deutsche Bahn train traffic is severely affected by storm damage. Some routes are completely closed due to flooding. However, according to current information from Deutsche Bahn, train traffic between Munich and Ingolstadt will resume on Tuesday.

Berlin promises help
Economic Affairs Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) promised reliable support to the people affected by the floods in southern Germany. “In the flood areas, the only priority now is saving human lives. This is the imperative mood of this hour. “The people in the flood areas must also be helped with reconstruction,” he told the “Augsburger Allgemeine”.

The fact that large areas of land are flooding more often than in the past is a consequence of global warming. “We can’t reverse it, but I believe the terrible events of our time will stimulate the debate about how seriously we take climate protection,” Habeck said.
