The predicted thunderstorm after hot Monday came and carved a path of devastation, especially in the Upper Austrian Danube Valley. A farmer in Stroheim, where a family of six was fleeing in a square truck, was hardest hit. The old farmer had to go to the hospital.
Shortly after midnight, the front, bringing with it wind and hail, arrived over Upper Austria. It traveled a lot along the Danube through our state. The fire department went on 14 missions attributed to the thunderstorm. Usually only streets had to be cleared of fallen trees and small-scale mudslides and flooding had to be eliminated.
“It Made a Huge Blow”
But lightning struck Stroheim. “It made a huge impact,” firefighters neighbors reported after lightning struck a farm at 1:06 a.m. Just four minutes later, there was great alarm for the Floriani disciples. The severe thunderstorm with storm and rain made it difficult for the emergency services. The wind continued to fan the flames in the square, driving them over the rafter from the service wing to the residential wing.
The helpers called alarm level 3 to have as many helpers as possible on site. In the end, 20 fire departments with 180 helpers, most of whom were on duty all night, also used water from pools to extinguish the blaze, and rescued all 100 cattle.
The family of six – the old farmers (55, 60), the son (33) and the daughter-in-law (31) and their two children (1.4 years) – fled the flames. The old farmer (60) had exerted himself too much to put out the fire and had to be hospitalized in Wels. The family who had refurbished the farm was taken care of by the Crisis Intervention Team of the Red Cross.
