The European Union and the Canadian government want to work more closely together in the future. For example, exchanges on artificial intelligence (AI), climate issues and the ‘Horizon Europe’ research program will be intensified.
This was decided on Friday during a two-day summit with representatives of Canada and the European Commission in Newfoundland (see video above). The summit was attended by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel, among others.
Talks had been announced on the war in Ukraine, the situation in the Gaza Strip, as well as on economic, energy and climate issues. The two sides last met for such a summit in Brussels in the summer of 2021.
This time, Trudeau reiterated his country’s solidarity with Israel. “We stand firmly together in pursuit of peace, stability and prosperity in the world, including Ukraine and the Middle East,” the report said in a closing statement. On the occasion of the war in Ukraine, calls were made to tackle war crimes.
