Instead of toasting their anniversary by candlelight, a couple from Burgenland had to alert the fire brigade on their special day.
For Helga (67) and Norbert Gradwohl (72) from Wortberg, the oven is still not turned off, even after 50 years of marriage. On the day of their golden wedding anniversary, not only were their hearts on fire for each other, but also for the roof of their banquet hall behind their house. But first things first.
“On Thursday evening, two friends brought a carriage by that we had to prepare for Sinterklaas Day. We have six horses in the stable,” says Filius Jürgen Gradwohl (50). After work he invited them to the banquet hall and heated the Swedish oven.

“When my son Fabian (22) came by after two hours, he noticed this smoke, apparently caused by a smoldering fire in the chimney pipe.” To prevent the flames from spreading to the stable, the men immediately climbed onto the roof with a garden hose, tore down the tiles and started to extinguish the fire.
The Wortenberg, Hackerberg and Stinatz fire brigades were also quickly on site. “They were fighting the last embers. Now that my brother has a chimney renovation company, it is now clear what we are going to give our parents for their wedding day,” laughs Gradwohl.
