Emergency call late Tuesday afternoon: On the Tauernkogel (Salzburg) there was an East Tyrolean emergency in the Alps on Tuesday. He had to be rescued by the Mittersill Mountain Rescue Service.
The mountaineer found a heavy crushed stone at over 2800 meters on a small ice field near the climbing route. Shortly after, there was another strong rock slide that broke part of the trail. The 27-year-old was unable to descend under his own power and then made an emergency call.
The mountain rescue team Mittersill went with 19 men to the highest possible point of the St. Pöltner Hütte (about 2400 meters above sea level). The young Tyrolean was about 300 meters higher.
“Due to the heavy fog, we then climbed on to the unharmed but badly shaken mountaineer,” said Rudolf Steger, the operations manager at the Mittersill site. The 27-year-old was eventually freed from his plight unharmed with the police helicopter “Libelle”. The Tyrolean could be dropped off at the Felbertauern around half past nine in the evening.
