After weeks of attacks by aggressive monkeys, the Japanese authorities have now captured and killed one of the animals. He is said to have been behind at least one attack. The problem has not yet been solved, local media report.
Specialized hunters stunned and captured the roughly six-foot-tall Japanese macaque at a school building in the city of Yamaguchi. After confirming that the monkey was behind at least one attack in recent weeks, he was euthanized.
49 scratching and biting attacks
The monkey gang has been keeping the residents of Yamaguchi in suspense for several weeks. At least 49 scratching and biting attacks on children and adults were reported on Tuesday. Most injuries are minor and people often carry umbrellas and pruning shears to defend themselves. “Eyewitness accounts of monkeys of various sizes, and even after the male was captured, we keep getting reports of new attacks,” said an official.
While Japanese macaques are common in many parts of the country, frequent attacks in Yamaguchi are uncommon. In addition, the animals like to attack crops.
