No help received – farmer lets harvest worker bleed to death in Italy

Date:

A gruesome case has caused horror on a farm in Borgo Santa Maria, Italy: an Indian worker’s arm was severed in an accident. The harvest worker’s employer did not care about the life of his helper: he simply dropped the heavily bleeding injured man in front of his enclosure and left the man to his fate.

A farmer’s inhumane behavior is making headlines in Italy: a harvest worker had his legs crushed in a horrific accident and one of his arms cut off.

Farmer put severed arm in fruit box
The wife of the accident victim was also at the scene. “I begged the owner to help us, I begged him on my knees,” the woman told La Repubblica after the incident. But the farmer didn’t mind. He is said to have simply placed the severed arm in a fruit box and driven the accident victim, his wife and the box to his accommodation. “He dropped us off in front of the house and ran away,” the woman told police.

It was only an hour and a half later that neighbors alerted the rescue team. The seriously injured man was flown by helicopter to hospital, where he ultimately died two days later.

The operator said he was panicking
The 37-year-old farmer is now under investigation for negligent homicide, failure to render assistance and breaching safety regulations. He explained his behavior by saying that he had panicked. He also did not allow the harvest helpers to use the machine, which would later be his downfall.

Minister of Labor: “Act of barbarity”
The dead man himself had no official work permit in Italy. His hourly wage would have been only four euros. In view of the current situation, trade unions warned of systematic exploitation in the sector: many people in Italy work for pitiful wages. The number of illegal workers is estimated at 230,000 people. Labor Minister Marina Calderone said the case was an “act of barbarity that must be prosecuted at all departments.”
