New details have emerged after the dramatic police operation on Thursday evening in a municipal building in Vienna: According to this, a 39-year-old aimed a dummy machine gun at emergency services alerted by residents.
The area around Kapaunplatz in Vienna-Brigittenau has had a dramatic night. As reported, a tenant of a municipal building threatened the alerted police several times with a long firearm on Thursday evening.
The accident started around 9:40 p.m. when neighbors of the huge residential complex called 911. Hendrik S. – probably drunk, but clearly furious – is said to have been waving a knife around in the courtyard. When the first police arrived, the man retreated to his third-floor apartment. There he appeared on his balcony with a gun in his hand.
Shots echoed through community buildings
Special units took up positions in front of the Viennese’s apartment. Suddenly the door opened and S. pointed the machine gun – probably a replica of an AK 47 Kalashnikov – at the officers. The first shot was fired from a police weapon, but it missed the man. The 39-year-old then retreated to his own four walls and locked the apartment door.
Moments later he reappeared on the balcony and targeted police officers who had taken up positions in the courtyard. Then another shot rang out through the warm summer night – this time Hendrik S. was hit. He took his last steps back to the living room, where he finally collapsed.
Seconds later, special forces stormed the apartment. Once the danger was averted, first aid measures were immediately initiated. “However, only the man’s death could be determined,” said police spokesman Mattias Schuster.
Surrounding apartments evacuated
However, this did not mean that peace returned to the settlement. Containers that could indicate explosives were found in the attacker’s apartment. That is why the surrounding apartments were evacuated – a false alarm, as it turned out.
Only at dawn could the operation be ended and the tenants returned to their apartments. The shock in the settlement is profound.
