Two US police officers are now in prison for failing to assist in a deadly attack on African-American George Floyd. A federal court in Minnesota on Wednesday sentenced two to three and three and a half years in prison. Two other former police officers involved had previously been sentenced to prison terms.
More than two years after the death of African-American George Floyd in an American police operation, Alexander Kueng and Tou Thao must go to prison, the US Department of Justice announced on Wednesday. Last week, the former police officer involved, Thomas Lane, was sentenced to two and a half years in prison.
In February, the federal court in St. Paul found all three guilty of violating Floyd’s constitutional civil rights during the operation. In addition, they allegedly made no attempt to stop their colleague Derek Chauvin’s use of physical violence. Medical assistance was also not provided.
43.5 years in prison for murder
White ex-cop Chauvin had his knee pressed to Floyd’s neck for about nine minutes while Floyd begged him to let him breathe. According to the autopsy, Floyd lost consciousness and died. Chauvin (46) has been convicted of murder and is already serving his 43.5-year sentence.
Floyd’s death on May 25, 2020 sparked demonstrations against racism and police brutality in the United States. The latter is mainly due to the fact that videos show how police officers pressed the unarmed man to the ground.
