Trial in Vorarlberg – A cow’s tongue was torn out

Date:

A particularly brutal case of animal abuse will be heard on Friday at the regional court in Feldkirch (Vorarlberg). In addition, a farmer must answer for the illegal import of medicines.

After the painful death of a cow in the Bregenz region in early October last year, three suspects are on trial. The men – aged 22, 36 and 69 – are accused by the public prosecutor of having pulled out the tongue of a cow, causing serious injuries to the animal and unnecessarily torturing it for a long time.

Knit around the tongue
The incident is said to have occurred during hoof trimming. When the animal refused to move into the designated claw position, the farmer tied a rope around the cow’s tongue and probably pulled so hard that the tongue was torn off.

But that’s not all: after this brutal act, the animal is said to have been in the stable for days without medical attention. Eventually, it was transported to a slaughterhouse in Salzburg. There, the cattle are said to have passed both the live and meat inspections without any problems.

The illegal administration of drugs to animals
However, the case only became public in February of this year. In addition to animal abuse, the farmer is accused of illegally importing antibiotics and cortisone from Germany and treating his animals with them. He was reported to the district administration for illegally supplying medicines.

The case also caused a political earthquake – with real consequences: veterinary care in Vorarlberg was reorganized as a direct result of the scandal. The hearing on Friday will take place from 9:00 to 11:00 in the jury courtroom of the regional court in Feldkirch.
