The Franz-Senn-Hütte above the Oberbergtal in Neustift in the Tyrolean Stubai Valley has been badly hit by the storm damage of recent days. A separate emergency route had to be constructed. The landlord speaks of an “economic disaster”.
The road in the Oberbergtal to the starting point is no longer usable, the very popular via ferrata in Höllenrachen destroyed, bridges in the tour area demolished and the internal power station silted up: Thomas Fankhauser, former host of the high tour base and excursion destination Franz-Senn-Hütte in the Stubai Alps, can hardly believe what the storms have done since last weekend.
Now filling 170 beds “is an illusion”
The flagship cabin of the Innsbruck section of the Austrian Alpine Club, which is known far beyond the country’s borders, has about 170 beds. Filling them now in high season under the current circumstances is an illusion. “At the moment I have received verbal confirmation from the municipality that the entrance from Neustift to Seduck is possible,” says Fankhauser.
A parking concept is being sought
Only day visitors are allowed to park there. An alpine route leads from Seduck as an emergency route along the right side of the valley to Oberiss. “According to information from the TVB, this route will be secured in the coming days,” Fankhauser said. “Currently, the municipality, TVB and we are looking for a parking concept – also so that people do not park and cause damage as in the winter.”
If the hut was not on the Stubaier Höhenweg and if participants in alpine courses did not fight their way to the shelter, the hut would probably be empty.
Necessarily also destroyed
The construction of an emergency road had already begun. “Monday this week’s storms have once again destroyed all efforts.”
The cabin is currently being supplied by helicopter, which is expensive, but delivery by jeep should be possible again in one to two weeks. Fankhauser: “We are experiencing an economic disaster.”
