Alexander Van der Bellen’s walk on Salzburg’s home mountain has almost become a tradition. For the fifth time, the Federal President allowed himself a festival holiday on the Gaisberg.
During the festival season in Salzburg, politics, business and society come together. In the presidential agenda of Alexander Van der Bellen, in addition to festivals, the walk on the Gaisberg is always marked as a fixed point. First organized in the 2016 election campaign, last paused because of Corona, it has become a tradition. Children of nature lovers, the Alpine Club and scouts walked with the president and his wife Doris Schmidauer.
“I only really got to know Salzburg during my time as president. The city, nature, the surrounding mountains,” says Van der Bellen during a short break with a view over the city. He loves the Gaisberg, but has never been to the top. “I’ve loved the mountains since I was young. But it’s the mountains themselves and not the peaks in particular.”
With “July” in July on the Gaisberg
She is almost everywhere the secret star where the Federal President goes with his dog “July”. The Greek shelter dog has been with Van der Bellen since 2019. Of course she was already on the Gaisberg, in her first year as First Dog. So she should know the ring road and the Rauchenbühelhütte.
There her master treated himself to a beer after the walk. Whether “July” got a slice of the roast pork that was served remains open. But one can speculate…
