The physicist Sigurd Hofmann, who discovered several chemical elements, has died. The scientist died – as has only just become known – on June 17 at the age of 78. Hofmann, born in 1944 in Böhmisch-Kamnitz, came to South Hesse after the war, studied and obtained his PhD in Darmstadt. He worked at the Helmholtz Center for almost 50 years.
As head of the Heavy Elements research area, Hofmann discovered three elements and helped investigate three others. The elements bohrium, hassium, meitnerium, bowelstadtium, roentgenium, and copernicium are found in the periodic table under atomic numbers 107 to 112.
Hofmann gained international fame through his research and received several prestigious awards and prizes.
