Life sentence – Sarah Everard’s killer lost on appeal

Date:

The gruesome murder case of Londoner Sarah Everard shocked the entire country last March and attracted a lot of international attention. The 33-year-old’s killer has now lost an appeal and must spend the rest of his life in prison. It is the first time in England’s history that a person has been sentenced to life imprisonment with no prospect of parole for such an act.

The killer was sentenced to life imprisonment. The court on Friday rejected the former police officer’s request for a reduced sentence. Judge Ian Burnett ruled that the verdict was correct given the circumstances of the crime.

The former police officer kidnapped, raped and murdered 33-year-old Sarah Everard on March 3, 2021. He used his service ID to stop the Londoner, who was on his way home at night, for violating current Corona rules and get him into his car.

The ex-cop is the first person in England to be sentenced to life in prison with no prospect of parole for a murder. Previously, this punishment was only imposed on people who had committed multiple murders.

Other minimum periods changed
The court also ruled in other high-profile cases. For example, the minimum prison sentence for a man who murdered his six-year-old son along with his partner was increased from 21 to 24 years. Another perpetrator, who killed his two children and his partner, was sentenced to a minimum of 48 years in prison instead of 40 years. The sentence for a double murderer who killed his wife and then his fiancée six years later was reduced from life to at least 35 years.
