More than 80 suspects are on trial in South Africa in connection with the gang rape of eight women. However, according to the detectives, it is still necessary to determine whether the suspects are actually involved in the rapes. The men were initially charged with illegal entry and possession of stolen goods.
A group of gunmen attacked the participants and raped eight young women on Thursday while filming a music video. According to the police, the robbery took place near the town of Krugersdorp west of Johannesburg.
The men therefore attacked the crew while they were setting up their equipment. According to him, the victims of the rape are between 18 and 35 years old. One woman was raped by ten men, another by eight. The suspects are said to be foreign workers who illegally dig in South African mines. 84 suspects were arrested in a raid. Two other suspects were killed in a shootout with police. A third was injured and taken to hospital, police said.
President: “Terrible atrocities”
Police Minister Bheki Cele called the actions “an embarrassment to the nation”. President Cyril Ramaphosa issued a circular condemning the “terrible acts of cruelty”. He called the gang rape an “insult to the right of women and girls to live and work in freedom and security.”
