Silent memorial – thousands at sea of light for dead doctor in Vienna

Date:

Thousands of people showed their condolences for the tragedy surrounding Dr. Lisa-Maria Kellermayr during a vigil at Vienna’s Stephansplatz late Monday night. The doctor committed suicide on Friday at her practice in Upper Austria after months of death threats from the anti-vaccination scene. Watches were also held in other cities, such as Linz, Wels, Steyr and Graz.

From 8 p.m. people gathered at St. Stephen’s Cathedral, at 8:45 p.m. the bells rang and thousands of candles were lit and countless cell phone lights shone. The whole square in front of the cathedral was full of people. Those present at the commemoration intoned various songs, including the protest song ‘We Shall Overcome’.

“I believe that mourning together is good for a society,” says initiator Daniel Landau – the brother of Caritas president Michael Landau – who registered the commemoration under the motto “Yes we care”. He knew Kellermayr personally and didn’t meet her in her operating room until mid-July. They also talked about the belief that this was important to the doctor, Landau said. The bells were rung in memory of the deceased.

Scientists also took part in the vigil in front of the cathedral, such as molecular biologist Ulrich Elling. The former SPÖ health minister Alois Stöger and the chairman of the senior citizens’ association Ingrid Korosec (ÖVP) also came to Stephansplatz. Former health minister Rudolf Anschober (Greens) also commemorated the dead doctor.

Wakes also in Linz and Wels
Nearly 300 people attended a vigil for the Upper Austrian doctor in the center of Linz. At Taubenmarkt, candles were set up around the fountain and flowers were laid for a painting by Kellermayr. After a short speech by the organizer, the audience remained in silent devotion for a long time.

According to the APA count, about 150 people have been commemorated in court in Wels – and with it the district of the public prosecutor’s office. Candles were lit and flowers were laid in front of the building, and participants gathered for a silent memorial to the medic.

Insulted and threatened for months
Kellermayr had been insulted and threatened for months by opponents of the corona measures and vaccination, and she also published emails on her practice homepage. She initially received police protection, but then spent around 100,000 euros on protective measures, she says, because she did not feel sufficiently protected by the authorities.

The ordination was concluded in June. “I can’t take any chances when it comes to the safety of my patients and staff,” Kellermayr explained at the time. Also in June, the public prosecutor’s office in Wels dropped the investigation into a German suspect – on the grounds that they were not responsible, but the German authorities.

Found dead in her operation
The doctor was found dead in her office Friday morning. Austrian police are still investigating the hate mail against unknown perpetrators – it can be assumed that the allegations affect several people, the researchers said.
