Residents of Pune in the Indian state of Maharashtra observed a strange phenomenon and captured it on video. Millions upon millions of mosquitoes swirled through the air like tiny tornadoes.
The mosquitoes find perfect conditions in the Mula-Mutha River. Many residents fear that the millions of insects will transmit diseases.
“Not an unusual phenomenon”
“This is not an unusual phenomenon,” retired zoology professor Hemant Ghate told The Indian Express, adding that raw sewage is the cause of the problem, which is not being addressed.
“Their larvae are like mosquito larvae, they are red because of the hemoglobin in their blood. These insects are abundant in water bodies polluted with organic matter and are found throughout the Mula Mutha River.”
Ghate further said that the pupae (stage between larva and adult) of these insects develop into adults at high enough temperatures and therefore large numbers of mosquito-like adults emerge as swarms.
“When large numbers of adult insects fly over the water, the swarms sway in the light wind and look like waves. They do not sting, but their abundance indicates polluted water,” he explains.
