Because a five-year-old girl woke up her parents, a family from Oberndorf was able to escape from their burning house to the balcony. The fire brigade rescued the family from there.
Dramatic scenes took place in Salzburger Oberndorf on Thursday evening. Father, mother and their child (5) had taken refuge on their balcony on the first floor: there was a huge fire on the ground floor and they could no longer go outside!
Girl woke up parents and prevented something even worse
The five-year-old daughter probably saved her family’s lives the night of the fire. She must have noticed the fire. According to the fire brigade, she woke her parents. The father tried to reach the ground floor. But he could no longer fight the fire, so the only option was to escape to the balcony.
The volunteer fire brigade was immediately on site
After a few minutes, the Oberndorf volunteer fire brigade came to the family’s aid. The family attracted attention with cries for help and were immediately rescued from the balcony with a ladder. Mother, father and child were safely brought to the ground and handed over for rescue. Fortunately they were unharmed.
The location of the house made operations difficult
After 45 minutes, the 35 fire brigade members with six vehicles and four respiratory protection teams had extinguished the fire. The mission was extremely demanding for everyone. The house is only accessible from one side because it is located on the Salzach. The many flammable objects in the home fueled the fire even further.
The cause of the fire, which broke out in the kitchen, is currently under investigation. Either way, the family has lost their home for the time being. It remains to be seen whether it will be habitable again.
The city’s own contact point is available to support families
One person who was also on site the night of the fire was the mayor, himself a former firefighter. Georg Dundja: “When such an accident happens, those affected are of course in shock. The municipality helps the family as best as possible with its social contact.”
Heroic act on her 5th birthday
The local boss thanked the fire brigade: “They worked extremely professionally.” Djundja had a present brought to the little heroine on Thursday: it was her fifth birthday.
Interview: “You can’t get rid of the smell of fire”
Fire chief Alexander Traintinger from Oberndorf about the consequences of house fires.
Mr. Traintinger, how did you experience the mission?
The three people were trapped on the first floor due to the fire and enormous smoke. Flames shot out of the kitchen window. We brought the residents to safety with the help of a ladder. A respiratory protection team immediately began extinguishing the fire on the ground floor.
What are the chances that you will be able to live in your home again?
When it burns so hard, soot builds up everywhere. The smell is also a problem. After a house fire, it not only sticks to clothing, but also to furniture. As emergency services, we also notice this in our own bodies. You wash your hair three times after the fire. But you can’t get rid of the burning smell. It may still be there after a week.
