As is well known, Tyrol is also taking measures in the field of holiday traffic this year: so that passing people do not leave the highway during a traffic jam and the low-lying road network is blocked again, the so-called exit in summer. The first balance: Since Pentecost, there have already been 56,000 rejections, most of them along the B179 Fernpassstraße.
Tirol advocates this measure, among other things, to maintain security of supply. “If emergency services lose an enormous amount of time or can no longer get to the scene because streets in cities along travel routes are no longer passable due to traffic jams,” it says that action must be taken. The recipe for this is the departure bans, which were first introduced in the summer of 2019 – and which led to political protests, especially in Bavaria.
The first interim balance for this year is now available: As of June of this year, more than 56,000 rejections have been registered in the districts of Kufstein, Innsbruck-Stadt, Innsbruck-Land and Reutte – the most in the district of Reutte.
“Driving bans have an effect”
“The driving bans also have an effect in this summer season: there were usually no traffic jams in the local areas and the traffic flow remained smooth,” summarizes Governor Günther Platter (ÖVP). On those days when more was sold in some places, the measures were immediately adjusted accordingly.
Tyrol keeps to size
Also Minister of Transport LHStv. Ingrid Felipe (Groenen) emphasizes that Tyrol wants to comply with the measure: “In view of this burden, the driving bans are a necessary and now proven emergency measure. That is why the driving bans will apply again in the coming weekends and strict checks will be carried out so that traffic and supply security for the population and our guests is guaranteed.”
In any case, the districts of Reutte (30,000) and Innsbruck-Land (24,000) were the districts with the most rejections since the reintroduction of the driving bans. However, in the Kufstein district there were 2,000 rejections, in Innsbruck only 450, reports Günther Salzmann of the Tyrolean traffic police. He said the travelers would show understanding for the bans. Destination, source and local traffic are exempt from this measure.
