Tyrol steps in – many migrants in Burgenland: the police are overloaded

Date:

The number of arrests in Burgenland is increasing. It is no longer possible to register all migrants. Now the states must intervene.

Burgenland has been struggling for weeks with more and more refugees and asylum applications. Now the amount of work, which is actually more administrative tasks than police activities, has reached a new high.

More than 2400 refugees in one week
As reported, 591 migrants had to be taken to a primary reception center and registered on Saturday. In the past week, 2,430 immigrants from Hungary crossed the border into Burgenland – that number only increased during the refugee crisis of 2015.

Despite the staff increase ordered by the Ministry of the Interior, the executive branch is reaching its limits. There are already 27,800 catches this year and 19,938 in 2021.

Now colleagues in the west of Austria must intervene. According to internal information, “the processing capacity in Burgenland is currently no longer sufficient, more than 200 asylum applications had to be processed in other federal states this weekend”.

Tyrol accepts applicants
Only Tyrol had to accept and process 40 asylum seekers. According to the first information, these are Afghans, Tunisians and Indians. They would have been housed in the police detention center in Innsbruck, the aliens police and in Plon.

There was initially no comment from the responsible office of the Ministry of the Interior. By the way: in 2021 the Tyrolean police had to take over 139 extra asylum applications under the overflow scheme after arrests in Burgenland. This number is likely to be exceeded this year.
