Arnold Schwarzenegger’s “Austrian World Summit” began Tuesday morning amid protests from environmental NGOs in Vienna’s Hofburg. The ex-politician’s event has the motto “We have the power” and aims to show solutions for the current climate crisis.
In addition to the host himself and Federal President Van der Bellen, Minister of the Environment Leonore Gewessler (Greens) and former world heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko are also present. UN Secretary-General António Guterres issued a statement during the morning via a video message calling for more speed in climate protection.
Politicians support protests
Van der Bellen once again spoke out in favor of the event: “What climate protection costs us today is nothing compared to what it would cost to do nothing.” In his speech, Schwarzenegger praised a new form of environmentalism: “When I look at our environmental movement today, I see an urgent need for action. We need a new environmental movement – based on construction, growth and common sense.”
Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) in turn praised Austrian companies that are doing a good job in the field of renewable energy or recycling processes.
„Austrian World Summit“ bloß Greenwashing?
Schwarzenegger’s summit also sparked heated mood and is now controversial among environmental NGOs. The “Last Generation” and “Fridays For Future” accuse the event of greenwashing. Activists held onto the ring at the Hofburg in the morning and demonstrated against the event.
